It is a distant galaxy, in the far future year, 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet and the only source of Melange, a vital drug used by Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two families, the Atreides and the Harkonnens, fight one another for sole control of the Melange mining operations on Arrakis. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen, Duke Leto's son, Paul, and Paul's mother, the Lady Jessica, flee deep into the desert of Arrakis. There, they are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Under the influence of Melange, Paul learns he has special powers and, that he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman under his leadership, forms an army of warriors, and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who is in league with the Harkonnens. Paul vows to avenge his father's murder, and sets out to liberate Arrakis and its people from the Emperor's rule, and to fulfill his destiny

I have seen this movie many times and enjoy it more each time. It is often faulted for being too confusing, and maybe it is at first, but that is the charm. Paul's character development is key and supplies the energy and power that draws me back for more. Some movies are meant to be viewed once and that's fine, but Dune requires careful attention. Watch it again. Solit paintings. Xolos schedule. Xolos dogs. Dune is a fascinating beast of a movie that was riddled with production troubles well before the cameras got even close to rolling a single frame of 35mm celluloid; it was in production before Star Wars but IT in turn influenced Star Wars in terms of production, story and scope. So how did the film adaptation turn out considering it was in development since the early 1970s? Well, David Lynch finally got to direct the film but was denied 'final cut privilege' for the movie by the producers: and the end product suffered greatly from this. It's not unwatchable (it's got some great shots contrasted by HEAVY exposition) but it's a film frustrated with itself for not being something greater than it could have been.
Dune takes a classic book from 1966 and brings the 80s Hollywood extravaganza niche to the project: for the most part it's watchable but it's far from perfect. Star Wars already drained the core elements from its source material: the Bene Gesserit (The Jedi and The Force) the Empire (Galactic Empire) and even the Spice Melange (the Spice Mines of Kessel) were used as leverage for the original Star Wars movie. That's the trouble with adapting longstanding literature: the story may cover things other movies have since explored in their own inspired way.
Is Dune a decent movie? Yes. Is it flawless? Heavens no, but its historic significance in undeniable in the face of cinema itself. Is it bad? No; but it's not particularly great either.
Dune gets 3/5 stars. It's a fair space-opera romp that is sure to be watched by all devote Star Wars fans out there, because without the book the franchise probably would never have been a thing in the first place.

I'll echo what other people have said, some people hate it, some love it, me, I love it. For a 'look' I can't think of a better Sci-Fi film (except, perhaps 'Alien' the costumes are just fantastic, as are the sets. OK some of the special effects don't stand up to today's CGI epics, but, and this is a big but, CGI DID NOT EXIST 25 YEARS AGO, so all you moaners can just be quiet about that, yup? I would say it was possibly the best that could have been done with the available technology, people should consider this before slating a film with no regard to it's release date. The film tries very hard to stick to the book, and yes it really should have been at least two or three films in total, but it wasn't, so just over two hours is what you get. The soundtrack is awesome, the acting and casting for the most part pretty darn good for a Sci-fi film and it tackles the interpretation of a classic novel head on, adding a few interpretations of it's own.
Watch it, then watch it again, you'll be surprised what you missed, then if you have the time, read the books, and watch it again. 9 out of 10 for me.
